How to Fishtail Braid Tutorial Video

This fishtail braid tutorial is so easy and SO cute!

Awh, this post gives me major feels for my long, long hair! My husband and I recently chopped our manes off – but I know it went to a good cause. :) I’ll show a before and after soon! I am loving my new haircut! I was SO apprehensive about short hair because I haven’t had my hair shorter than my armpits since elementary school. I got it cut and colored just how I said in my obsessive Pinterest board. No worries, I even got it a lot shorter than expected! My hubby loves it – I think we might like my short hair even more than my long! Which is totally crazy and unexpected.

So now, my hair is definitely not long enough to rock a fishtail braid, but this was one of my lazy girl go-to hairstyles when I had long hair. I loved how easy this hairstyle was and how many oohs and ahhs I received when I did it! Everyone thinks a fishtail braid is so complicated, but it is SO easy. It is just a little monotonous, especially if you have as long of hair as I did. But for the normal bunch of gals it shouldn’t take you as long. Once you get the hang of it you can literally do it while you’re watching TV.

I always spritz my hair with a texturizing spray like Beach Babe by Not Your Mother’s. If you attempt to braid your hair dry while you have layers you will have a ton of pieces sticking straight out after you finish. Cactus style. No bueno. Avoid that by braiding your hair just a little bit damp. It’s always easier for me to fishtail braid my hair a little bit damp – it makes the hair more pliable and conforms to the braid.

How to Fishtail Braid your hair:

1. Separate your hair in to two equal parts.

2. Pull a small piece of hair from one side

3. Take that small piece of hair and cross it over and add it to the other section of hair

4. Pull tight

5. Pull a small piece of hair from the other side

6. Take that small piece of hair and it over and add it to the other section of hair

7. Pull tight

8. Continue until you reach the end of your fishtail

Things to remember:

– I love using texturizing spray before I braid my hair. The texturing spray will help your hair stay in the fishtail braid. Texturizing spray will also help get the boho look when you loosen your braid.

– Make a tight fishtail, secure with a rubber and THEN you can take small sections to loosen the fishtail up. Loosening your fishtail to make it a bit messier makes it perfect for a boho look. I always loosened my fishtail – it makes the look more relaxed and “oh I just threw my hair together” ;)

– You can fishtail all of your hair, half up/half down, or I have even seen some amazing tutorials where you fishtail your hair and then make it in to a bun! The options are endless for this braid. It is the perfect way to get creative with your hair when you’re in a rut!

– I always make sure I pull a piece from the back-most (is that a word) part of the section to crossover. If you end up only pulling from the front portion it does not give as big “braid effect”. You’ll see!
