Inspirational Books About Travel For Your Next Vacation
I really love to read, but when you lead a busy life, it’s often really difficult to find the time! When I was working in London, I never managed to finish a book. So I promised myself that I would read a lot during my travels in South East Asia. I was so excited about my adventure, that I started reading inspirational books about travel even before I had boarded the plane! The following are just five books that I would really recommend for your next vacation, and I’ve included a little synopsis of why I enjoyed each one so much. They will hopefully inspire you to travel more, and to travel better! Happy reading :)
5 Inspirational Books About Travel
Love with a Chance of Drowning
This book really taught me that sometimes you have to take a leap of faith if you want to get the most out of life. It’s a true story about a girl who meets a guy, falls in love, and then finds out he is about to sail across the Pacific. Despite having a huge fear of the ocean, she agrees to join him, and the book chronicles their everyday adventures. I really loved how honest she was about the journey, and about how terrible she is at sailing!
Holy Cow: An Indian Adventure
If you have always been intrigued by India, then you shouldn’t definitely read this. Again, this is a true account written by journalist Sarah MacDonald, who moves to India for love. Having been before, Sarah isn’t India’s biggest fan, and she gives a very honest insight to her life there. She also embarks on a mission to understand the various religions in India, which I found truly fascinating. It really taught me to be more openminded, and that there is often more to a place than meets the eye.
Wild
I expect that many of you have watched the film with Reese Witherspoon, but please read the book too! This memoir follows the journey of Cheryl Strayed, who decides to trek 1,100 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail. Her life has total fallen apart, and she is basically on the brink of a mental breakdown. This incredible story is about self-discovery, courage and determination. It really teaches you that as long as you never give up, you can achieve anything.
The Good Girl’s Guide to Getting Lost: A Memoir of Three Continents, Two Friends, and One Unexpected Adventure
This is a memoir that I could really relate to! Like the author, Rachel Friedman, I too had always played it safe up until I quit my job for a solo trip to Asia! This story really captures how important it is to leave your fears behind and get out of your comfort zone. It’s also an amazing story about friendship, and how meeting your opposite could totally bring a new perspective to your life.
The Beach
This may not be an easy read for a vacation, but it is one of my all time favorites. I don’t want to give too much away, as it’s a really a book you have to work out for yourself. It will really get you thinking though, and I found it difficult to put down. Or, you could watch the film instead if you’d prefer – who can say no to Leo DiCaprio in swim shorts for 90 minutes! Either way, it’s a gripping story with an important message at its heart.
