Tourist in my Hometown: Moon Tower Inn [Food]
It’s almost dinner time and my stomach is growling and my mouth is watering typing up this post about Moon Tower Inn. Moon Tower Inn specializes in two things my husband loves: beers and burgers. My husband is a hunter so he loves to try different types of burgers and meats. He use to bartend at a craft beer bar called Republic House and one of the owner’s of RH also co-owns Moon Tower Inn so he introduced us to it!
I love the vibe of Moon Tower Inn. It is located off Canal St. in the 3rd Ward of Houston, TX and it is Houston’s one and only brew pub. It is a dive bar meets neighborhood block party. There is great food, cool staff, and is just a great place to sit back and have a good time with friends.
The food is amazing. They have so many different varieties of meat: duck, wild boar, elk, buffalo, deer, lamb, and several others to choose from. I grew up strictly eating chicken and beef from the grocery store so it is kind of a culture shock to be integrated in to my husband’s hunting family. :) I was always a little scared to taste (much less cook with) different types of meat, but I am finding out it isn’t all that bad. [PS if you have any recipes for deer send them my way!]
On Moon Tower Inn’s menu you will find fun add ons like ancho-chile Dr. Pepper onions, hotberry compote, fried eggs, sambal mayo, fire roasted salsa, pineapple-ancho pic, and lots of other yummy sounding ingredients. I don’t know how these people think of these ingredients – but I am sure glad they did! Typically, I am a plain-jane meat, cheese, and bun kind of girl, but that is just not tolerated here. You can’t go to a place like this and not try it out!
I am a huge fan of hotdogs – it may sound silly, but it is so true! I could eat a plain ol’ microwaved hot dog any day any time. So I decided on the elk hotdog. I told the girl to surprise me with what she thought I would like on the hot dog. She asked me a couple of questions about spiciness, etc. and then I was on my way to the picnic table area to wait for our order. Caleb decided on a buffalo burger.
It is such a great atmosphere at Moon Tower Inn. It’s not a stuffy restaurant. It is super casual and has an all outdoor picnic table seating. There are tons of tables on the lawn complete with string lights hung above. We also noticed a small stage platform. I think that would be a great place to hang out with some friends and listen to live music. Every Tuesday is Movie night at dark and they have a huge white screen with a project that they play movies on while you sit under the stars. We will definitely be attending that soon!
I have no idea really what my hot dog had on it – but all I need to know is that it was delicious. There was bacon, cheese, peppers, salsa, a fried egg.. I mean this thing was loaded up. Normally, I would pick around and throw things off, but I ate this WHOLE THING. I only let my hubby have one bite to taste. You have to try out Moon Tower Inn (3004 Canal St Houston, TX 77003) next time you are in Houston, TX!
